Your dog’s paws do a remarkable amount of work for something we mostly only notice when they track mud through the house. They are shock absorbers, all-terrain tyres, insulation, brakes and grooming tools rolled into one compact package. Understanding what each part of the paw actually is, and what it does, makes every other part of paw care easier: you will know what you are looking at when you check for grass seeds, why pad injuries behave the way they do, and why nails and dewclaws need help from you when the rest of the paw largely looks after itself.

The parts of a dog’s paw at a glance
Turn a front paw over and you will find five distinct structures:
- Digital pads: the four smaller pads, one under each toe
- Metacarpal pad: the large heart-shaped central pad (called the metatarsal pad on the back feet)
- Carpal pad: the small stopper pad higher up the front leg, near the wrist
- Dewclaw: the thumb-like toe on the inside of the leg, above the other toes
- Claws (nails): one at the end of each toe
Back paws are almost the same, minus the carpal pad, and many dogs have no rear dewclaws at all. Now let’s take each part in turn.
Paw pads: built-in shock absorbers and all-terrain soles
The pads are the toughest skin on your dog’s body, and they need to be, because the rest of a dog’s skin is surprisingly delicate. The MSD Veterinary Manual notes that dog skin is thinner and more sensitive than human skin, and that dogs have special pads on their paws that help them grip different surfaces. The pads are the exception to the delicate rule: thick, cushioned and keratinised on the outside, with fatty tissue underneath that spreads impact.
According to VCA Animal Hospitals, foot pads do three jobs at once: they absorb the shock of every step when a dog walks and runs, they insulate the feet from extreme heat and cold, and they provide the traction and protection that let dogs move over rough, uneven ground. That is why an active dog can trot across gravel that would have us hopping and wincing.
Tough is not indestructible, though. Hot summer bitumen, sharp shells and glass, and long stretches on abrasive surfaces can all injure pads, and pad wounds are notorious for bleeding freely and healing slowly because the dog has to keep walking on them. The digital and metacarpal pads
The four digital pads and the big central metacarpal (or metatarsal) pad are the load-bearing surfaces, working together like the sole and heel of a shoe. Each digital pad cushions its own toe, while the central pad takes the bulk of the weight. Because dogs walk on their toes rather than flat on their feet, these pads are in contact with the ground with every single stride, which is why wear-and-tear problems almost always show up here first.
The carpal pad: the one that never touches the ground
That small, lonely pad partway up the front leg puzzles a lot of owners because it never contacts the ground in normal walking. It sits at the carpus, the joint equivalent to our wrist, and comes into play when the leg flexes hard: skidding to a stop, scrambling down a slope, or landing from a jump. Think of it as a heel-brake and bumper for moments of hard deceleration.
Do dogs sweat through their paws?
Partly, yes. The MSD Veterinary Manual notes that dogs have sweat glands on their feet that may play a minor role in cooling, which is why a stressed dog at the vet can leave damp paw prints on the exam table. But paw sweating is a bit player: dogs regulate body temperature primarily by panting, not sweating. This matters practically. Because a dog cannot sweat the way we do, hot Australian summers are genuinely dangerous for them, and those sweat glands in the feet will not save a dog from overheating on a long midday walk.
Toes: dogs walk on their fingertips
A dog’s paw is the equivalent of our hand or foot, but dogs are digitigrade walkers, meaning they stand and move on their toes with the wrist and ankle held well off the ground. What looks like a dog’s “knee” partway up the back leg is closer to our ankle. Walking on the toes gives dogs their speed and agility, and it also explains why toe and nail problems affect gait so quickly: there is no flat foot to compensate with. A dog with a sore toe, an infected nail bed or an overlong nail redistributes weight immediately, and over weeks that altered gait can load joints in ways they were never meant to carry.
Dewclaws: the leftover thumb that still has a job
The dewclaw is the small toe on the inside of the leg that never touches the ground in normal walking. Most dogs have them on the front legs; some also have them on the rear. They are not simply useless leftovers. The American Kennel Club explains that front dewclaws are firmly connected to the leg by ligament and bone, and that dogs use them to grip bones and toys, to stabilise the lower leg during high-speed turns, and for traction and climbing. Rear dewclaws are a different story: they usually attach by skin alone, with no bony connection, which makes them floppier and more injury-prone.

Nails: the part that needs the most help from you
Dog nails are thicker and tougher than human nails; the MSD Veterinary Manual notes they are built for running and digging. Unlike the pads, which self-maintain reasonably well, nails on modern pet dogs almost always need human intervention, because carpet, lawns and lino do not wear nails down the way kilometres of hard ground once did.
Inside each nail is the quick, the living core of blood vessels and nerve endings that grows longer as the nail grows longer. It is the reason nail trimming worries so many owners, and the reason little-and-often beats occasional big cuts: regular trimming encourages the quick to recede, while neglect lets it advance down the nail. Left too long, nails do real damage: they change how the toes sit on the ground, force weight back onto the wrong parts of the paw, and can curl around into the pads. Overgrown nails are one of the most common and most preventable paw problems vets see.
How the parts work together, and where things go wrong
Healthy paws are a system. The pads cushion and grip, the toes fine-tune balance, the nails provide dig-in traction on soft ground, and the carpal pad and dewclaw back everything up under hard cornering and braking. When one part fails, the others compensate, which is why a single overgrown nail or one cracked pad so often shows up as a general change: reluctance on walks, licking one foot, clicking on the floorboards, or an odd gait on stairs.
A quick weekly paw check covers the whole system in under a minute per foot: spread the toes and look between the pads, press each pad gently for tenderness, check nail length including the dewclaw, and look for cracks, redness or anything lodged in the fur.
